Leatherjackets are the larval stage of the crane fly or daddy-long-legs they can cause damage to lawns leaving yellow patches and dead grass it is crucial to manage these pests effectively. Using leatherjacket nematodes, Steinernema feltiae significantly reduces the larvae.
When are leatherjackets most active?
When you start to see the adult daddy-long-legs in your garden (normally towards the end of August) you will know that in a few days they will be laying eggs. These eggs will hatch quickly, within two weeks and start causing damage to your lawn by feeding on the grass roots.
The young crane fly larvae start to feed on the roots of grass, continuing throughout Winter and into Spring.
What do I treat leatherjacket insects with?
Treat your lawn with nematodes, these are microscopic worms which enter the larvae and release bacteria and the larvae die. Just mix, water onto your lawn, keep the lawn moist so they can move around and they will help with control.
Environmentally friendly and safe for children, pets and wildlife. No need to exclude children and pets from treated areas.
How do I know if I have chafer grub or leatherjackets?
Chafers are a C shape, white colour with a very distinct orange head and 6 legs whereas the leatherjackets are more of a grey, brown colour, worm-like and legless.
What damage do the leatherjacket larvae do to my lawn?
Yellow patches, thinning grass, the grass can easily be pulled up.
How to Use Leatherjacket Nematodes:
The nematodes come complete with instructions and can be applied using a watering can with a rose with large holes or nematode applicator. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 10ºC (50ºF) and ensure the soil does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying the nematodes.
Drop in temperature after applying nematodes
Nematodes can survive the odd frost, so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied them.
